North Bend High School students are making real waves in coastal science through their year-long mini-boat project, Hesperia. After completing three ocean voyages—including launches from the R/V Pacific Storm, R/V Sally Ride, and R/V Atlantis—the Hesperia continues to provide real-time data that helps scientists track Pacific surface currents.
On November 14th and 15th, senior Malia Mosley and NBHS teacher Christina Geierman showcased the project at the State of the Coast Conference at SWOCC—Oregon’s premier coastal science gathering that brings together researchers, Tribal partners, educators, fishermen, and community members. Malia presented alongside university scientists and marine experts, highlighting how NBHS students are contributing authentic oceanographic data and joining statewide conversations about our coastal environment. Her presentation marks an exciting milestone for North Bend as our students step into visible STEM leadership roles.
“This project represents everything we value in coastal STEM education—curiosity, persistence, community partnerships, and authentic scientific contribution,” said North Bend High School teacher Christina Geierman. “Our students are not just learning about the ocean—they’re studying it firsthand.”
